Sheldon, Illinois has **2 weigh station locations** operating under Illinois DOT and FMCSA regulations to ensure commercial vehicle weight compliance and highway safety. Every professional driver operating semi trucks, tractor trailers, 18-wheelers, box trucks, and other commercial vehicles on Illinois highways must understand weigh station rules, bypass eligibility, and compliance requirements when passing through the Sheldon corridor.
Federal weight limits cap single axle loads at 20,000 lbs, tandem axles at 34,000 lbs, and gross vehicle weight at 80,000 lbs (with standard configurations). Illinois may have special permit routes for oversize and overweight loads exceeding these limits. Sheldon-area weigh stations use both static scales and weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology to screen vehicles as they approach, with PrePass and Drivewyze transponder programs allowing eligible carriers with clean safety ratings to bypass without stopping.
Owner-operators and fleet managers routing loads through Sheldon should be aware that open weigh stations must be entered by all commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR unless they have an active bypass notification. Failure to stop at an open weigh station is a serious violation that can result in fines, out-of-service orders, and CSA score impacts that affect your operating authority. Always check weigh station status via 511, Trucker Path, or state DOT apps before approaching Sheldon.
